The founder and CEO of Smart Choice® has been named Citizen of the Year by the High Point Enterprise newspaper. Doug Witcher is well known in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina for his exceptional philanthropy in the community and his involvement with High Point University, United Way, YMCA and many local programs. Witcher’s charitable donations exceed $40 million combined — and often the recipient organizations aren’t even aware of the gift until it is presented.
“Our CEO is extremely well connected to the city of High Point and surrounding areas and works in concert with leaders of local non-profits and educational institutions,” said Andrew Caldwell, president of Smart Choice. “His goal is to make sure these programs have what they need to create a stronger community and improve the lives of individuals.”
As reported by the High Point Enterprise, High Point University President Nido Qubein calls it a classic story of the American Dream that also illustrates a core element of Witcher’s nature. “His goal was not money, though he became quite successful,” Qubein said. “His goal was to help others.”
