Business Planning Doesn’t Have to Be Traditional

CEO Letter

Doug Witcher, CEO of Smart Choice, a network for independent insurance agentsBusiness planning doesn’t have to be traditional, and you don’t have to follow any specific template. Sometimes, it’s simply about sitting down and asking yourself a few important questions about where you want to go. This year, for instance, resist the temptation to fall into the fatigue of what has been a long and arduous year of changes. Do not let yourself give into the trap of trudging along until “things get better,” and instead, use this time as a way to reinvent how you approach running your business. Change is something we're all reluctant to face, even in the best of times. Mostly because it is uncomfortable and foreign. Last year was full of discomfort, fear, unknowns, and an entire host of other emotions. It was also full of new triumphs, and human growth. We can use our newfound adaptation skills to continue reinventing how we do business, why we do business, and how we can translate these changes into more success professionally.

So, as you sit down and plan for the rest of 2021, ask yourself these things:

  1. What am I going to do differently this year, that I haven’t tried in the past?
  2. How are those changes going to help my business grow?
  3. How are those changes going to impact my customers in a positive way?

Pick a new focus – some new need that has made itself obvious in the last year – and find a way to bring solutions to the marketplace so you’ll be a leader in your community. Check-in on your goals and plans every couple of months! Don’t forget about your plans by becoming mired in the everyday grind of running your agency. Be relentless in your focus so that you can gauge your progress and readjust your plans as needed. Celebrate your wins and learn from your failures. It’s all part of the growth process!

Every goal should have a reason for existing – make sure you write down the purpose for your desire to see that goal come to fruition.

That way when you check in on your progress, you’re always motivated to keep going. Above all, as we move through this year, we must keep moving forward. Perseverance is what defines entrepreneurship and makes every reward and milestone worth it in the end. Resist the urge to say “I’m going to do ‘x’ until things return to normal.” Create a new normal and don’t fall back into old patterns. Make this year your BEST year.
