From the Front Line

Family. It’s just one word, but one which carries so much meaning this time of year. As 2019 comes to a close and most folks are hurriedly making holiday plans, what always lingers in the background are the memories. A niece’s or nephew’s first step, a first bike ride without training wheels, or the dreaded sixteen-year-old taking a stroll around the neighborhood in dad’s new car — it is family making memories together that makes this time of year so special. 

At Smart Choice, this time of year is no different, as we consider ourselves a family here as well. As I look back on 2019, I realize we had some incredible firsts to celebrate: We added a record number of new agency partners and should finish just under 1,500 new agents for the year. We had our first month writing $2 million in new business for Smart Start Commercial, and our first month writing over $1 million in new business for Smart Start Personal. And…for the first time in Smart Choice history, in conjunction with you, our agency partners, we will write over $1 billion in collective premium through our partner carriers. Together, as an agency force, your books of business represent over $8 billion in collective premium. That is a tremendous accomplishment!

Another big “first” for us in 2019 was the opportunity we took to begin a new and incredible tradition at Smart Choice called the Leadership Agents Club President’s Trip. We took a group of Smart Choice Leadership Agents on a trip only they could qualify for, and for several days we were one big family in a foreign country. The trip was a great opportunity to enhance and build upon the relationships we all share. 2020 will bring an expansion to this trip and several additional Smart Choice-only trips, because we realized the immeasurable value of spending time together.

We are all dependent on each other’s success, but often the small victories that occur in each of your offices can only be seen in a production report at the end of the month or quarter. Hearing these success stores firsthand from our agents on the trip, as well as the opportunity to get to know each other better, reminded us of what we all mean to one another. It was refreshing and uplifting, and sparked a new level of passion in me as a leader, along with the many Smart Choice employees who are blessed to work in this space with each of you every day.

Will 2020 bring challenges? Absolutely! Will we have to work harder than we did in 2019? Absolutely. Fortunately, I know that this new year will bring this family of agents, territory managers, and Smart Choice employees together to meet and conquer anything thrown our way, and that we will continue to find record breaking success together!
